‘A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.’ (National Curriculum 2014 – Appendix A)
We aim to give the children in our care a wide range of opportunities and experiences. Learning a language enriches the curriculum, providing excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers, helping to create enthusiastic learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life. Through progressive and purposeful planning, children will begin to understand and express their ideas in another language. Through the exploration of another culture and language the children will be given another perspective on the world, facilitating their natural curiosity and interest, laying the foundations for future language learning and helping them to become global citizens.
In KS1, children are introduced to Languages through the use of classroom routines, songs and games.
French is taught in Key stage 2, using the Lightbulb Languages Scheme of work as a basis. This provides teachers with a range of lesson ideas, resources and native speaker recordings to ensure correct pronunciation and authentic listening opportunities. The teaching of the four skills; speaking, listening, reading and writing, is balanced within the scheme. Our scheme is based on a two-year cycle to provide topic variation in the mixed aged classes, but with spiral progression, revisiting and developing learnt skills.
Teaching includes repetition, games, role play opportunities, mime, the use of quality texts and recordings, songs, rhymes and poetry, to ensure that learning is enjoyable and accessible to all.
Children will leave our Primary School as confident language learners. They will be able to express simple ideas and opinions in French and also have transferable skills and knowledge to take forward to secondary school language classes. They will have an appreciation and understanding of different cultures and language.
